Recently I had the opportunity to work with Avis Funk Law in Varsity Lakes, photographing their team for both headshots and lifestyle imagery around their office. The goal was to create a collection of images that could be used seamlessly across their website, social media, and marketing—while offering both colour and black & white versions for flexibility.
Why Both Colour and Black & White?
Black and white photography has a timeless, professional quality that communicates trust and authority—qualities you want from your legal team. Colour images, on the other hand, are essential for modern branding and online engagement, giving warmth, personality, and vibrancy to a business’s digital presence. By providing both, Avis Funk Law now has options: crisp monochrome portraits for formal communications, and colour images for when they want to show a more approachable, personable side.
Shooting With Both in Mind
When planning a shoot that will be delivered in both colour and black & white, it’s important to make creative choices that translate across formats. That means:
Lighting: I used clean, directional lighting that gave definition to facial features and textures. Good lighting ensures the black & white images have depth and impact, rather than looking flat.
Contrast: Contrast is key in monochrome photography. I paid attention to light and shadow, as well as background tones, so the subjects stood out in both versions.
Neutral, versatile setups: Colours that look appealing in real life may not always translate well in black and white. By keeping backgrounds and styling simple, the images work beautifully no matter the treatment.
A Professional Yet Human Touch
The team at Avis Funk Law wanted more than just traditional headshots—they wanted images that show the human side of their practice. Alongside individual portraits, we captured lifestyle photographs of staff in and around their office. These shots help tell the story of their work environment, making their brand feel approachable, modern, and community-oriented.
Final Thoughts
Black & white and colour photography each have their place, and when used together, they can strengthen a brand’s visual storytelling. For Avis Funk Law, the result is a versatile collection of professional images that highlight both the authority of their team and the approachable culture of their office.
